Four Beckman researchers chosen as NCSA Faculty Fellows

2006-07 NCSA Faculty Fellows List Includes Beckman Institute Researchers Beckman Institute faculty members Narayan Aluru, Rohit Bhargava, and Kenneth Watkin have the honor of being chosen as NCSA Faculty Fellows for the 2006-2007 academic year. Also selected to the list is Beckman affiliate faculty member, Jiawei Han.

The NCSA Faculty Fellows Program is jointly funded by NCSA and the UI Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research. Through the program, faculty can access and benefit from NCSA's high-performance computing and storage environment, cutting-edge visualization and data analysis capabilities, and opportunities for multi-disciplinary collaboration. Details on the Beckman Institute faculty members and their projects are as follows:

Naryan Aluru is a full-time Beckman faculty member and co-chair of the Beckman Institute Molecular and Electronic Nanostructures research initiative. He is being recognized with an NCSA Faculty Fellowship for the second time. His NCSA Faculty Fellows project is "Cyber Tools for Multiscale Analysis of Electrostatic NEMS."

Rohit Bhargava is a full-time faculty member in the Beckman Institute Biological Sensors group and an assistant professor in the UIUC Department of Bioengineering. The title of his NCSA Faculty Fellows project is "Computational Framework for Prostate Cancer Diagnosis and Prognosis."

Kenneth Watkin is a part-time faculty member in the Beckman Institute Molecular and Electronic Nanstructures research initiative and a professor in the department of Speech and Hearing Science. His NCSA Faculty Fellows project is "Remote Web Service-based 3D Medical Volume Reconstruction, Segmentation, and Interrogation."

Jiawei Han is an affiliate faculty member in the Beckman Institute Human-Computer Intelligent Interaction initiative and is a professor in the Department of Computer Science. His NCSA Faculty Fellows project is "Mining Outliers and Rare Events in Data Streams."

NCSA Faculty Fellows receive up to $36,000 in support which can be used for adjustment of teaching responsibilities, graduate research assistant support, travel support, and summer salary.
