Code of conduct
The Beckman Institute is a community of scholars to foster interdisciplinary collaboration, inspire bold scientific risk-taking and nurture new ideas and discoveries. All Beckman Institute community members (faculty, staff, students, postdocs and visitors) are expected to adhere to the Beckman Institute core values and code of conduct.

Code of conduct
Beckman Institute community members have a general duty to conduct themselves in a manner that strengthens the standing of the Beckman Institute and the university.
Regarding professional conduct, those participating in the Beckman community should practice:
- Accountability and the ability to answer for actions or omissions.
- Treat others with respect and kindness.
- Communicate openly and effectively in a courteous and polite way.
Beckman Institute Guidance Statements
Be accountable and able to answer for your actions or omissions.
- Be honest with yourself and others about what you can do. Recognize your abilities and limitations and carry out those items you are truly competent at, while seeking support for those you are not.
- Always behave and present yourself in a manner that does not call into question your suitability to work in an academic environment.
- Inform your supervisor or collaborators of any task or issues that prevent you from performing your job competently and safely.
- Demonstrate integrity and care in all interactions with those who seek your guidance, support and service.
- Take responsibility for completing all required training and for following research protocols and policies required by the campus.
Treat others with respect and kindness.
- Promote opportunities for those who seek your guidance, support or service.
- Do not discriminate or condone discrimination against people who seek your guidance, support or service.
- Respect the individuality of the people who seek your guidance, support or service.
- Act in an ethical, professional, and courteous manner toward students, staff, and faculty.
- Promote an intellectually stimulating environment, fostering free and respectful discussions among individuals holding many and diverse opinions.
Communicate openly and effectively in a courteous and polite way.
- Communicate openly and cooperatively with colleagues from various roles.
- Communicate respectfully with people who seek your guidance, support or service in an open, effective and straightforward way.
- Recognize both the extent and the limits of your role, knowledge and competence when communicating with people who seek your guidance, support or service.
- Be open-minded and understand there are multiple ways to achieve a goal or result.
