Lirong Yan, Ph.D Associate Professor of Radiology and Biomedical Engineering at Northwestern University, will present, "Advanced Neurovascular MR Imaging: from Marco- to Microvascular Imaging.” Neurovascular imaging is essential for studying the vascular pathophysiology of cerebrovascular disease and neurodegenerative diseases. Our lab has a long-standing interest in developing novel non-contrast-enhanced MRI techniques, particularly for MR angiography, perfusion, and quantitative hemodynamics. In this talk, I will present our latest advancements in neurovascular imaging, spanning from macrovascular to microvascular levels. These developments may offer promising new tools for investigating cerebral vascular diseases and Alzheimer's disease and related dementia.

The IGB’s Art of Science program is a celebration of the common ground between science and art. Images from Illinois research were the starting point for these works, which were created by researchers working in partnership with IGB artist Julia Pollack. These pieces are the result of conversations between the scientists and the artist.
The title of this year’s show, “Aerenchyma,” refers to the spongy air-filled cavities that run up and down within a plant, connecting the underground body to the air above. During drought conditions, the aerenchyma degrades, and the plant must redistribute its power to maintain resilient growth patterns. This biological structure, fragmented or whole, allows the plant to breathe. As science asks questions to understand our world, we may experience split structures. But might we also consider growth and collective survival in a changing world as our shared dream?
The opening is free & open to the public Refreshments provided
May 9, 2025 4 p.m. - May 9, 2025 8 p.m. • Analog Wine Library, 129 N Race St, Urbana, IL

Many funding agencies require a personal statement in addition to an applicant’s research proposal. Why?! What on earth are you supposed to talk about? If these questions have induced writer’s block, this workshop is for you. We will assess the range of personal statement prompts you may encounter and distill their shared essence. Participants will learn the qualities of a compelling statement and practice writing techniques to arrive at a complete first draft. Register in advance for the link to join this online workshop. See more Graduate College Workshops.
