Biography

Monica Fabiani (Ph.D., 1990) is a professor of Psychology and Neuroscience, and the Assistant Head for Faculty Development in the Psychology Department.  She is a fellow of the Association for Psychological Science (APS) and was the President of the Society for Psychophysiological Research (SPR) in 2008. In 2019, she received the Award for Distinguished Scientific Contributions to Psychophysiology, the highest honor granted by SPR. Since 2015 she has been the Editor in Chief of Psychophysiology.  She is the author of more than 170 publications. Her research has consistently been funded by a number of agencies, including National Institute on Aging (current), National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), and the Office of Naval Research (ONR). 

Research

Monica Fabiani's research interests are in the cognitive neuroscience and neurophysiology of aging, as well as in the development of tools for the non-invasive mapping of human brain function. As is typical of the cognitive neuroscience approach, her research involves the integration of data from different domains, including behavioral responses, neuropsychological tests, and brain anatomy and function (event-related brain potentials, or ERPs; structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging, or sMRI and fMRI; and optical imaging: pulse-DOT, EROS and fNIRS).

Fabiani's research includes several interconnected lines: (1) Cerebrovascular contributions to structural, functional, and cognitive aging, using a newly developed optical method (pulse-DOT) to assess cerebrovascular status (funded by NIA); (2) Neurophysiological and structural, bases of cognitive control, attention and working memory in normal aging, with a focus on individual differences (funded by NIA); and (3) development of new non-invasive optical brain imaging methods and their integration with currently existing methods (EEG/ERPs, functional and structural MRI, ASL, and TMS).  These methodological developments are in collaborations with Prof. G. Gratton and include the event-related optical signal (EROS) and the cerebral arterial pulse measured with diffuse optical tomography (pulse-DOT).  She is also collaborating with Prof. Rogers on the development and application of wearable electronics for EEG and optical recordings.
