Biography

Roxana Girju heads the Computational Semantics Lab at the Beckman Institute and is a part-time faculty member in the Organizational Intelligence and Computational Social Science and the Social and Emotional Dimensions of Well-Being Groups. She is associate professor of linguistics holding affiliate appointments in the departments of computer science and spanish/portuguese, as well as the director of the computer science & linguistics joint major (linguistics side). Dr. Girju earned a B.Sc. in computer science from "Politehnica" University of Bucharest (1995) and a Ph.D. degree in computer science from the University of Texas at Dallas (2002). Her research interests are in Artificial Intelligence and Natural Language Processing / Computational Linguistics with emphasis on computational semantics and pragmatics and their applications to automatic question answering, textual inference, affective computing, dialog systems, and social media. Currently, she combines her computational linguistics research and teaching to build novel human language technologies in human-human and human-computer interaction.

Honors

"Best of ACII" and "Best Student Paper" awards at the International Conference on Affective Computing and Intelligent Interaction (ACII 2017); Best Paper Runner Up Award, IEEE International Conference on Semantic Computing (ICSC 2017); Engineering Council Outstanding Advising Award, College of Engineering, UIUC (2015); Celebration of Excellence Award, Computer Science Department, UIUC (2015); University of Illinois Office of the Chancellor - special nomination for the Defense Science Study Group (DSSG), Institute for Defense Analysis, 2011; 1st place, Semantic Evaluations (SemEval) task on Classification of Semantic Relations, software system competition (2007); UIUC list of teachers ranked as excellent (most years since 2007).

Research

Dr. Girju's research focuses on both theoretical and computational models of automatic text understanding with particular emphasis on semantics and pragmatics-oriented models for textual reasoning. Her expertise and interests are in representing, annotating and analyzing semantic and pragmatic (language use and perception/human behavior) information in textual data. Dr. Girju's most recent research projects include psycholinguistics, behavioral analytics and affective computing (aka emotions) approaches to health care, dialog systems, and social media. Her projects have covered a number of European languages as well as standard and varieties of Arabic.

Dr. Girju is also interested in computational models for the acquisition and processing of causal knowledge, an indispensable part of human/machine reasoning. Her approach is based on computational and psycholinguistics techniques in finding flexible representations of causal information that allow abstraction across various contexts. She is also working at the interface between verbal and non-verbal communication in developing novel human language technologies.
