Roxana Girju is a U of I assistant professor of Linguistics holding affiliate appointments in the Departments of Computer Science and Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese. She is also a part-time faculty member in the Beckman Institute Artificial Intelligence group. Dr. Girju earned a B.Sc. from "Politehnica" University of Bucharest (1995) and a PhD degree in Computer Science from University of Texas at Dallas (2002). Her research interests are in Artificial Intelligence and Natural Language Processing / Computational Linguistics with emphasis on computational semantics and its applications to question answering and textual inference.

Dr. Girju's research focuses on both theoretical and computational models of text comprehension with particular emphasis on semantic models for textual inference. One of her current projects is the the cross-linguistic semantic interpretation of various syntactic constructions, such as noun phrases based on crosss-linguistic empirical evidence from a set of Germanic and Romance languages. The emphasis is on both intra-linguistic issues, such as paraphrases (when to choose one construction versus another - eg, in English, the s-genitive "silk's dress" vs. the of-genitive "dress of silk"), and on cross-linguistic aspects such as semantic-driven machine translation. In applications such as second language acquisition, machine translation and multilingual question answering, appropriate understanding of noun phrases is essential for humans and machines to be able to avoid the generation of infelicitous or ungrammatical constructions in the target language (eg, "causa de preocupacion" in Spanish cannot be translated as * "worry cause" in English). Thus, both human and machine translators should know what are the equivalent constructions in the target language that preserve the meaning in context.
Dr. Girju is also interested in computational models for the acquisition of causal knowledge, an indispensable part of human/machine reasoning. Her approach is based on computational and psycholinguistic techniques in finding flexible representations of causal information that allow abstraction across various contexts.
