Biography

P. Scott Carney received his Ph.D. in physics from the University of Rochester in 1999. He is a professor in the U of I Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and a full-time member in the Beckman Institute's Bioimaging Science and Technology group, and a faculty member in the Coordinated Science Laboratory. His fields of professional interest are in optical physics including imaging, near-field microscopy, classical and quantum coherence theory, beam propagation, fundamental issues of energy conservation, and mathematical methods in inverse scattering and the propagation of light.

Research

P. Scott Carney's research is primarily in the field of theoretical optics. Lately his work has focused on inverse scattering with inhomogeneous fields. The main area of application is in near-field imaging, though there is considerable overlap with other problems such as tomographic imaging with photon density waves in diffusive media and various forms of probe microscopy. With fellow researchers, he has developed semi-analytic solutions to inverse scattering problems that lead to stable, efficient algorithms for a broad class of experiments. Many open problems remain in this program such as development of nonlinear inversion methods, limited data reconstruction, and improved forward modeling. He is also working on problems in the propagation, guiding, and scattering of surface waves. There is a great deal of interest in this subject among researchers working towards large scale integrated optics.
