Marie Agathe Charpagne, an assistant professor of materials science and engineering, accepted a faculty appointment at the Beckman Institute.

Her research at Beckman will focus on new materials and processes for bone implants using metal additive manufacturing. Additive manufacturing has the potential to revolutionize implant design by allowing for highly customized implants with complex geometries that are tailored to individual patient anatomy. It also opens opportunities to design new, bioactive materials. The x-ray technology at Beckman, as well as the institute's Microscopy Suite, will allow her to characterize the materials printed in her lab with unprecedented accuracy, with the aim to tailor their mechanical and corrosion properties in conditions that simulate what they would experience in the human body.

In collaboration with Beckman affiliate Cecilia Leal, an associate professor of materials science and engineering, Charpagne will test the materials' cytocompatibility and develop new alloys for next generation implants.

Charpagne is a member of Beckman's Computational Imaging Working Group in the Integrative Imaging research theme. Charpagne is also an assistant professor of aerospace engineering and an affiliate of the Materials Research Lab.
