Apply now for Beckman fellowships and awards

A number of awards and fellowships at the Beckman Institute are available for graduate students. The application deadline for the Beckman Graduate Fellows Program is midnight Monday, February 22, 2016. All other fellowship and award applications are due by noon on Monday, March 11, 2016.

Graduate Student Fellowship and Award Opportunities


Beckman Graduate Fellows Program
The Beckman Graduate Fellows Program, supported by funding from the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation, offers University of Illinois graduate students at the M.A., M.S., or Ph.D. level the opportunity to pursue interdisciplinary research at the Institute.

Research projects must involve at least one Beckman faculty member who carries out their research at Beckman in addition to a second U of I faculty member, and preference is given to those proposals that are interdisciplinary and involve the active participation of two Beckman faculty members from two different groups. Application deadline Monday, February 22, at midnight.

Nadine Barrie Smith Memorial Fellows Program
In honor of Nadine Barrie Smith’s life and achievements, Nadine’s husband, Andrew Webb, established the Nadine Barrie Smith Memorial Fund (Fund) which is supported by Nadine’s family, friends, and colleagues. The Fund provides fellowships to female engineering graduate students who are conducting research in the general field of medical imaging (e.g., ultrasound, optical, magnetic resonance) at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Preference for shall be given to students from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Up to two $4,000 fellowships will be awarded. The purpose of the fellowship is to pay for housing and/or other living expenses so that the selected student can remain on campus during the summer to conduct research in Beckman Institute laboratories. Thomas and Margaret Huang Award for Graduate Research
The Thomas and Margaret Huang Award for Graduate Research supports graduate students in Human-Computer Intelligent Interaction (HCII) at the Beckman Institute. The Huang Fund, which supports the award, was established by Image Formation and Processing Group alumni James J. Kuch (M.S. ECE 1994) and Chang Wen Chen (Ph.D. 1992). Professor Thomas Huang has advised over 100 students during his career, which has spanned five decades and three major research universities (MIT, Purdue, and UIUC). He is a founder of the Image Formation and Processing group and a long-term co-chair of the HCII main research theme. The Huang Award is $3,500; we expect to select one to two awardees annually. Undergraduate Student Fellowship and Award Opportunities

The Erik Haferkamp Memorial Award for Undergraduate Research
The Erik Haferkamp Memorial Award for Undergraduate Research allows a promising undergraduate neuroscientist to pursue research at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology during the summer. A $3,000 disbursement will be made to the successful applicant’s University account at the end of the spring semester. A progress report, not to exceed one (1) page in length, must be completed at the midpoint of the summer and a final report, not to exceed two (2) pages in length, must be completed at the end of the summer. The successful applicant is expected to be engaged full-time in their research project at the Beckman Institute over the summer. Application deadline Monday, March 11, at noon.

The Janssen Family Undergraduate Research Award
The Janssen Family Undergraduate Research Award allows a promising undergraduate to pursue research in neuroscience or psychology at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology during the summer. The recipient shall be a United States citizen or permanent resident of the United States. Preference will be given to female applicants. The successful applicant is expected to be engaged full-time in their research project at the Beckman Institute over the summer. One $3,000 award will be given. Application deadline Monday, March 11, at noon.
