Neuroscience Program Events

"Neurogenomic mechanisms of psychiatric and substance use disorders," by Seth A. Ament, PhD, Maryland Psychiatric Research Center, Department of Psychiatry and Institute for Genome Sciences, University of Maryland School of Medicine

The United States is experiencing ongoing epidemics of mental health and substance use disorders. Genomic technologies are providing insights into genetic risk factors, neurobiological mechanisms, and the potential for precision medicine.

March 4, 2025 4 p.m. • Beckman Institute 1005

Gene Robinson • Neuroscience Program

"Microglia regulating brain functions in development and degeneration," by Dr. Ukpong Eyo, PhD, Associate Professor of Neuroscience, Department of Neuroscience, University of Virginia School of Medicine.

In this talk, Dr. Eyo will present largely unpublished work from his diverse research team revealing important roles for microglia in regulating neural development and vascular function that could be of relevance to neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorders.

March 11, 2025 4 p.m. • Beckman Institute 1005

MIP Seminar: Dr. Denise Okafor, Ph.D., Penn State University, "Allosteric mechanisms of transcriptional control in FXR"

Research Summary

We investigate structural mechanisms of signaling and regulation in protein complexes. We use MD simulations to determine how conformational dynamics of proteins are altered in different functional states. A broad range of biochemical and structural techniques are also employed. Combined, these allow us to carefully elucidate molecular mechanisms that govern the regulation of protein function. By understanding how proteins are regulated endogenously, we aim to identify novel strategies to selectively modulate protein function. Nuclear receptors are one of our favorite classes of molecules to study, because of the fascinatingly complex but elegant allosteric regulatory mechanisms that drive their function. They also play critical roles in metabolism, development, reproduction and other biological processes, which make them highly attractive therapeutic targets.

HR Series: Fostering a Culture of Respect II: Disability Equity: Compliance, Etiquette, and Inclusion

Participants will understand the importance of the American with Disabilities Act, the Genetic Information Non-Discrimination Act (GINA), and other disability laws. They will learn the dos and don’ts around disability etiquette and engage in discussions on disability awareness in our work environments.

Individual Development Plans as Tools for Mentoring Graduate Students

This session will address the features of Individual Development Plans (IDPs) and their use in mentoring graduate students. We will discuss some best practices for the faculty mentor’s role in the IDP process, as well as how IDPs fit into new changes to NSF requirements for funded graduate students. We will also explore a case study about complexities of using IDPs as a part of your mentoring.

No registration required. Join this virtual event at: https://go.grad.illinois.edu/eventspace
