Biography

Narendra Ahuja received his Ph.D. from the University of Maryland in 1979. He is a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and the Coordinated Science Laboratory (CSL) at the U of I and a full-time faculty member in the Beckman Institute Artificial Intelligence group. His fields of professional interest are next generation cameras, 3D computer vision, video analysis, image analysis, pattern recognition, human computer interaction, image processing, image synthesis, and robotics.

Research

The central theme of Ahuja's research is the understanding of computational relationships between images and 3D scenes for human-computer interaction. Recent work has lead to a family of versatile new cameras that extend the capabilities of the traditional devices in a variety of ways. His work on 3D vision has emphasized scene description by integrating information in different visual cues, such as stereo, texture, motion, and shading. As a part of 3D vision, he has also developed camera systems that, like human eyes, actively select, focus, and analyze different parts of the scene. He has introduced novel methodologies for using the derived 3D descriptions of the scenes for autonomous robot navigation, video compression and video synthesis.

Ahuja has reverse-used his research on computational image interpretation to devise perceptually significant representations and depictions of scenes that are central to his projects in human-computer interaction, including anatomical visualization, weather modeling, traffic monitoring, digital video communication, visual information systems, and desktop publishing. His omnifocus camera acquires panoramic images that show all objects in focus, along with their scene depths. Others of his families of cameras acquire hemispherical views, monocular panoramic strips, stereo panoramic strips of scenes and high dynamic range videos. Working with two optical scientists, he has developed a new design for a head-mounted augmented reality display. In a joint project with two neuroscientists, he is working on understanding the computational algorithms used by animals (fish, frogs) to extract individual signals embedded in a cluster of similar signals. In another project, with a neuroscientist and an entomologist, he has developed a six-legged robot modeled after the American cockroach. As an application of his image understanding algorithms, he, together with a railroad (civil) engineer, is developing and deploying computer vision based automatic railcar monitoring systems for three railroad companies and organizations. He has collaborated with computer architects on parallel computer architectures and algorithms for image analysis. The results of his group's past research have been used in products and systems developed by industry, including General Electric, Westinghouse, Honeywell and Advanced Technology, Inc., and government labs.

Ahuja's collaborations include those with researchers in the Human Perception and Performance Group on perceptual validation of advanced imaging and computer vision methods; the NeuroTech Group and the Department of Entomology on the insect-like robot and scale dependent processing; and the Department of Civil Engineering on automated rail inspection.

Ahuja's major sources of research support are the Army, DARPA, NSF, ONR and industrial grants.
