  • Biography

     Prof. Irudayaraj has a Bachelors in Agric. and Biological Engineering from India; M.S. in Computer Sciences and a M.S. in Biosystems Engineering from the University of Hawaii; and a Ph.D in Biological Engineering from Purdue University. He has taught at Utah State University, The Pennsylvania State University, and Purdue University. He moved to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Bioengineering in 2017. His laboratories are located at the Biomedical Research Facility in the Mills Breast Cancer Center at Carle Foundation Hospital and the Micro and Nanotechnology Laboratory (MNTL). He is heavily vested in interdisciplinary research and plays a key role at the Cancer Center at Illinois and is presently working to establish a Superfund Center in Toxicology. He is a faculty of the Carle-Illinois College of Medicine and holds courtesy appointments in the Departments of Materials Science and Engineering, Comparative Biosciences, Agricultural and Biological Engineering. He is an affiliate faculty member of the Carl R. Woese Institute of Genomic Biology, Beckman Institute, and MNTL.

  • Research

    Prof. Irudayaraj’s group is interested in developing biosensors for cancer and single molecule technologies to elucidate fundamental intracellular mechanisms with a focus on epigenetics. They are interested in microbiome evaluation to understand cancer recurrence and toxicology of environmental contaminants. Their group has also developed oxygen nanobubble therapeutics to treat retinal diseases. Core technologies developed/applied are Super-resolution microscopy, single molecule fluorescence tools, Plasmon resonance imaging, ultrasensitive lateral flow sensors, and nanobubble guided therapeutics with a focus on oxygen delivery.
