  • Biography

Jonathon Senefeld is an assistant professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Community Health. Jonathon Senefeld’s research program focuses on advancing the understanding of nonpharmacological interventions (such as exercise) to mitigate the detrimental effects of human aging and metabolic diseases. Specifically, Jonathon Senefeld’s research program is interested in how skeletal muscle fatigue negatively influences exercise responses in older adults and people with diabetes, as well as how exercise training might improve these impaired responses. Jonathon Senefeld’s research program is also interested in how sex-specific mechanisms contribute to the etiologies of muscle fatigue and the physiological processes that limit human performance.

In addition to his primary focus on the integrative response to exercise in humans, throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Mr. Senefeld and his collaborators led a national program sponsored by the U.S. Government to coordinate the collection and distribution of convalescent plasma for the treatment of individuals with COVID-19.

    Education

    • B.S., exercise physiology, Marquette University, 2013

    • Ph.D., clinical & translational rehabilitation health science, Marquette University, 2018

  • Honors

2021: Recipient of Team Science Award, Mayo Clinic

  • Research

    Research areas:

    • Sex differences in integrative physiology

    • Blood flow during exercise

    Research interests:

    • Skeletal muscle bioenergetics

    • Antibody therapy

One key goal of my research program is to discover physiological mechanisms contributing to the bioenergetic basis of skeletal muscle fatigue in humans with diabetes mellitus and its precursor condition (prediabetes). At the Beckman Institute, I will collaborate with colleagues Brad Sutton and Wawrzyniec Dobrucki to develop novel imaging sequences using multiparametric nuclear magnetic resonance imaging to examine accumulation of fatigue causing metabolites (inorganic phosphate, hydrogen, and deprotonated phosphate) during dynamic exercise.
