    Nancy Sottos is a professor, the department head, and Swanlund Chair of Materials Science and Engineering at Illinois. She leads the Autonomous Materials Systems group at the Beckman Institute.

    Professor Sottos' research group specializes in meso-scale characterization of deformation and failure in complex, heterogeneous material systems ranging from advanced composites to integrated thin film devices. She has developed a number of interferometric techniques to investigate in-situ mechanical response with a recent emphasis on coupled field behavior at sub-micron length scales. She is also interested in residual stress development during processing and patterning of thin films and its effect on mechanical response.

    Her work at the Beckman Institute, carried out in collaboration with Professors Scott White, Jeff Moore, and Paul Braun in the Autonomous Materials Systems group, addresses issues in the development of autonomic materials systems that have the ability to achieve adaptation and response in an independent and automatic fashion. This new paradigm in materials design is inspired by biological systems in which damage triggers an autonomic healing response, or differentiation, maturation and genetic coding provide the instructions for structural adaptation and replication. An example of this research is the recent breakthrough in self-healing polymers. A polymer capable of autonomically healing damage and recovering 90% of its virgin fracture toughness was developed using embedded microencapsulated healing agents and catalytic chemical triggers. Professor Sottos' group is investigating new experimental methods to quantify autonomic response (e.g. the healing efficiency of a self-healing polymer) and understanding this response in terms of the materials chemistry, processing and microstructure.
