Headshot of Cate Wallace Cate Wallace, the Microscopy Suite manager at the Beckman Institute. Meet Cate Wallace, the Microscopy Suite manager at the Beckman Institute. Previously a senior microscopist, she is passionate about microscopy and especially loves to observe water bears under the lens.

Describe your role at the Beckman Institute.

I lead the Microscopy Suite in strategizing and planning for acquiring the next big technology. I also supervise staff and occasionally train users on a variety of instruments.

What is something that people might not know about your position?

I can still have fun looking at weird things under a microscope when I feel like it. It isn’t all about paperwork or giving tours. I can occasionally look at a water bear if I have time and want to have some fun.

What are you most proud of?

I am proud that I made it through grad school while working a full-time position and being a full-time mom to two beautiful girls.

Outside of your professional experience, what are you an expert in?

I am more of an expert in entomology, the study of insects, than an everyday person. That is because of my years of working with Bugscope.

When and where are you happiest?

I am happiest on the beach or poolside and somewhere warm with a book.

Who is your hero of fiction? Who is your hero in real life?

My fictional hero is "The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl." She shows that you can’t just know someone based on looks alone. She can take down the most formidable villains. My real-life hero is Taylor Swift. She had been resilient to the negative comments and she strongly believes in empowering women. She is very supportive of her fans and will generously give them money if needed or surprise them with visits.

What is your personal motto?

Not today! As in, am I going to give up? Or is this going to beat me? I like to try to have a positive outlook on things.

What is your favorite summer activity?

I love to travel on vacation!
