The official kickoff event for the Beckman Institute’s 20th Anniversary Year will feature dignitaries, faculty, and staff members honoring and remembering the founding, people, and work of one of the nation’s premier interdisciplinary centers.

The Beckman Institute 20th Anniversary Celebration Event will take place Thursday, April 16, beginning at 3 p.m. with a speakers program in the Institute auditorium that is open to the public. Beckman Institute Interim Director Tamer Başar will open the program, followed by U. of I. Chancellor Richard Herman, President Emeritus Stanley Ikenberry, and Chancellor Emeritus Mort Weir.
Patricia Beckman, the daughter of Arnold and Mabel Beckman and member of the Beckman Foundation, will speak next, followed by a video presentation featuring Beckman faculty and staff members offering their reflections on the building, the people, and the research that takes place at the Institute.
The program will then include remarks from former Institute Directors Pierre Wiltzius and Jiri Jonas.
Beckman Institute Founding Director Theodore L. Brown will give the keynote address, with his talk titled “Crossing Divides: The Origins of the Beckman Institute”.
A reception will follow in the Beckman atrium.
The 20th Anniversary Celebration is being held in April to commemorate the official opening of the Beckman Institute in April of 1989.
