Biography

Iwona Jasiuk received her Ph.D. (Theoretical and Applied Mechanics) in 1986 from Northwestern University. She is a professor in the Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering and a part-time faculty member at the Beckman Institute's 3D Micro and Nanosystems group.  Her interests are in the mechanics of materials, more specifically in modeling and characterization of composite materials with a focus on biological materials and nanocomposite materials. Prior to joining UIUC in 2006, she was on faculty at Michigan State University, Georgia Institute of Technology and Concordia University.

Research

Professor Jasiuk’s research addresses modeling and characterization of composite materials with a focus on biological materials and nanocomposite materials. Representative projects in the bio area include the characterization and modeling of bone as a hierarchical material and prediction of its local fields and constitutive responses at different structural scales in healthy and disease states, the modeling of bone adaptation in response to mechanical stimuli, and the repair by regeneration of large bone defects.  The projects on synthetic materials include the characterization and modeling of composite and nanocomposite materials as well as a design of bioinspired materials.
