COHEN NAMED AAAS FELLOW
Neal Cohen of the Beckman Institute’s Cognitive Neuroscience group has been named a 2012 Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Cohen, who is also the Illinois Director of the Center for Nutrition, Learning, and Memory, was honored for his “pioneering research on memory and amnesia, distinguishing brain systems and psychological characteristics that distinguish declarative and procedural memory. http://www.news.illinois.edu/news/12/1129AAASfellows.html

SCHULTEN HONORED WITH DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD
Klaus Schulten, director of the Beckman Institute’s Theoretical and Computational Biophysics (TCB) group, has been awarded the Biophysical Society’s Distinguished Service Award for 2013. Schulten was honored by the Biophysical Society for “laying the groundwork for the realistic molecular dynamic simulations of biological macromolecules on time scales that match the physiological realm, and for making the methods and software openly available.”

HUANG, ROGERS, SLIGAR HONORED AS SWANLUND CHAIRS
Thomas Huang, John Rogers, and Stephen Sligar have been named Swanlund Chairs, the highest endowed title at the University of Illinois. http://news.illinois.edu/news/12/1204swanlund_chairs.html

WELCOME TO NEW BECKMAN FACULTY AND STAFF
Welcome to the following faculty members on joining the Beckman Institute:

  • Professor Kathryn Clancy, Department of Anthropology, joins the Cognitive Science group and the HABITS Strategic Initiative as a Beckman Affiliate member (effective 11/9/12)
  • Professor John Erdman, Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition, joins the Bioacoustics Research Laboratory as a Beckman Part-time faculty member (effective 11/14/12)

GRANT FUNDING

NSF TRANSITIONS TO RESEARCH.GOV
The National Science Foundation (NSF) is transitioning its project reporting system from Fastlane to Research.gov. The University of Illinois Urbana campus is actively engaged in this transition now; please see our Grants Office or OSPRA if you require assistance.

BECKMAN INSTITUTE OPEN HOUSE
Mark your calendars and put on your thinking caps for creative exhibit ideas. The Beckman Institute will hold its biennial Open House on Friday, March 8 and Saturday, March 9, 2013. More details will follow in January — start thinking now about what kind of exhibit your research group would like to show!
