The Beckman Bulletin is a monthly digest from the director of the Beckman Institute. The Bulletin is sent to all faculty and staff. Each issue will highlight the latest happenings from around the Institute.

NEXT DIRECTOR’S SEMINAR MAY 3
The final Director’s Seminar of the semester will be Thursday, May 3. It will feature two talks by Beckman Institute Postdoctoral Fellows, David Mayerich and Nathan Parks. David’s talk is titled “Processing and Visualization Methods for High-throughput Microscopy Imaging.” Nathan will present “Examining Human Brain Function with Simultaneous Magnetic Stimulation and Fast Optical Imaging.” The seminar begins at noon in Room 1005 of the Beckman Institute. Lunch will be served.

LEWIS NAMED TO AAAS
Jennifer Lewis (Materials Science and Engineering) is among 220 new members named to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAAS). Lewis is a Beckman Institute affiliate faculty member in the Autonomous Materials Systems group. She has written more than 100 published papers and holds eight patents. She has also been named a fellow of the Materials Research Society, the American Physical Society, and the American Ceramic Society. Congratulations Jennifer!

CENTER FOR NUTRITION, LEARNING, AND MEMORY ANNOUNCES FIRST ROUND OF FUNDED PROPOSALS
The Center for Nutrition, Learning, and Memory (CNLM) announced its first round of funded proposals. These 13 funded projects support work in three types of nutrition and cognition research: translational/clinical research, basic research, and optimization of assessment and testing tools. All of the principal investigators have their primary appointments at Illinois. The teams include more than 45 researchers representing 16 departments or units, from seven colleges, with collaborators from eight national and international research facilities. For a list of the selected proposals visit: http://www.cnlm.illinois.edu/awards CNLM is a partnership between Abbott Nutrition, a division of Abbott, and Illinois units, the Beckman Institute, the Institute for Genomic Biology, the Division of Nutritional Sciences, and the Neuroscience Program.

REGISTRATION OPEN FOR IMAGING AT ILLINOIS CONFERENCE
The Imaging at Illinois: The Next Generation conference is set for June 1, 2012. This conference will highlight biological, biomedical, computational, and chemical imaging. This year the conference will be specifically focused on encouraging research innovation and education in younger researchers. Registration is open now through May 25, 2012.
