ROGERS ELECTED TO NATIONAL ACADEMY OF ENGINEERING

SCHULMERICH WINS BURSARY AWARD
Congratulations to Matthew Schulmerich on earning the 2011 Gordon F. Kirkbright bursary award from the Association of British Spectroscopists (ABS) Trust. Schulmerich, a researcher with the Bioimaging Science and Technology group, will be using the award to attend the International Institute of Continuing Medical Education’s workshop on breast imaging this March.

ERIK HAFERKAMP MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FOR UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH
Established in memory of Erik Haferkamp, the Erik Haferkamp Memorial Fund supports the Erik Haferkamp Memorial Scholarship for Undergraduate Summer Research to allow a promising undergraduate neuroscientist to pursue research at the Beckman Institute during the summer. For summer 2011, one $3,000 scholarship will be awarded, which also will include a tuition subsidy (for up to two credit hours) and a fees subsidy. The purpose of the $3,000 scholarship is to pay for housing and/or other living expenses so that the selected student can remain on campus during the summer to conduct research in Beckman Institute laboratories. The recipient shall be a United States citizen or permanent resident of the United States and must have already been working in a laboratory at the Beckman Institute for at least one semester prior to the Summer 2011 semester. Applications are being accepted now through midnight on Friday, April 8, 2011.

BUGSCOPE IN AFRICA
Congratulations to the Bugscope team for playing host to their first Bugscope session in Africa! The team worked with a school in Dar es Salaam in Tanzania whose students said it was one of the best activities they have had. http://bugscope.beckman.uiuc.edu/

**REMINDER** BECKMAN INSTITUTE OPEN HOUSE, MARCH 11-12, 2011
We will be hosting a Beckman Institute Open House March 11-12, 2011. We have over 30 exhibits signed up (thank you!) and we are looking forward to opening our doors to the community. GRADUATE STUDENT SEMINAR SCHEDULED FOR MARCH 2
The Spring 2011 Beckman Institute Graduate Student Seminar Series continues on Wednesday, March 2. This seminar will feature two short talks from students Wladimir Benalcazar and Zhuo Want. The seminar will be held in Beckman Institute Room 1005 and a pizza lunch will be served to those attending the talks.
