Welcome to the Fall 2010 semester at the Unviversity of Illinois! It is wonderful to see our returning friends as well as the new faces that are joining the Beckman Institute for the first time. I wish you all well and hope you enjoy a full and productive fall semester.


BECKMAN TO AQUIRE POWERFUL NEW OPTICAL INSTRUMENT
Thanks to a team effort by researchers and grant money from the stimulus program, the Beckman Institute’s Biomedical Imaging Center will be soon home to a new and uniquely powerful diffusive optical imaging system (DOT). http://www.beckman.illinois.edu/news/newinstrument

BROWN, MOORE, SUSLICK ELECTED ACS FELLOWS
Beckman Institute Founding Director Ted Brown and current faculty members Jeff Moore and Ken Suslick have been elected as 2010 fellows of the American Chemical Society. TAJKHORSHID RECOGNIZED AS EXCEPTIONAL BY CAMPUS COMMITTEE ON PROMOTION AND TENURE
Congratulations to Emad Tajkhorshid for being recognized as exceptional in terms of quality of work and overall achievement by the Campus Committee on Promotion and Tenure. Emad was just one of four who received this honor out of the 100 cases the Committee reviewed this year. This acknowledgement carries a $3,000 award to support Emad’s scholarly activities.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR: 2011 BECKMAN INSTITUTE OPEN HOUSE
The Beckman Institute will host its biennial Open House March 11-12, 2011. In the coming months you will receive more information about the Beckman Institute Open House, including hours of operation and exhibit sign-up information.

ALUMNI & FRIENDS EVENT IN CHICAGO, SEPTEMBER 21
The Beckman Institute  is hosting an alumni and friends event in Chicago on Tuesday, September 21, from 6-8 p.m. The event will include a cocktail reception and presentation hosted by me and featuring our very own Tom Huang and ECE Department Head, Andreas Cangellaris. The event will be held at the Illini Center in the Loop. Congratulations to the following investigators who have received grant funding during the period of July 22 – August 20, 2010:
