Read about an exciting new discovery in your area of research? Was your lab meeting a lively back-and-forth discussion about recently published research from your group? Are you interested in Beckman research outside of your own major or discipline? Well, the Beckman Institute has a new way to explore your thoughts about new scientific discoveries, ask questions about research done here, and share your own work with others.
The Beckman Blog is now online as a platform for students, postdoctoral researchers, and Beckman Fellows to blog about science done at the Institute and elsewhere. As stated in the guidelines, the Beckman Blog is intended to encourage scientific discussion across many fields in keeping with the interdisciplinary approach to doing research that is a foundation of the Beckman Institute.
We want this blog site to be a fun, interesting, and scientifically valuable platform for exchanging ideas and opinions on a wide range of science topics. There are numerous science-related blog sites, such as science blogs.com (http://scienceblogs.com/) and researchblogging.org (http://researchblogging.org/) that can provide examples of science blogging.
We hope that the Beckman Blog will become an exchange between the students, postdocs, and Fellows bloggers and those who comment on their posts that will bubble up into larger scientific discussions and perhaps even add value to the research.
As with any blog site, there will be conditions as far as language and staying on topic, but bloggers are free to comment on any scientific topic, and may write about their own work so long as any discussion of current unpublished research has been approved by the faculty member leading the research prior to posting. The success of the Beckman Blog will be determined by those who choose to participate.
You are free to make as many or as few blog entries as you like, but we hope you will blog at least once to twice a month, or perhaps weekly. The blog post with the most views per month will earn a $25 Target gift card for the blogger, and there will be a weekly drawing for a free cup of coffee for bloggers who post that week.
To become a Beckman Blogger, send your Illinois NetID, and first and last names to firstname.lastname@example.org. After the Beckman Blog goes live on Dec. 1 you will receive an e-mail with your username and password. You may then go the Beckman Blog, enter your profile information, change your password, and start blogging!
