The Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology is pleased to announce the appointment of Gerald Penn and Dimitris C. Lagoudas as Beckman Institute Senior Fellows for the fall 2006 semester.
The Beckman Institute Graduate Student Seminar Series presents the work of outstanding graduate students working in Beckman research groups. The seminars are open to the UIUC campus. The first seminar in the Fall 2006 series takes place on Wednesday, September 6 at noon in Room 1005 of the Beckman Institute. Two short presentations will be given.
A review of 40 years of data by conducted by Beckman Institute researchers Arthur Kramer, Kirk Erickson and Stanley Colcombe found evidence that exercise may slow age's impact on brain function, helping maintain whip-smart cognitive ability well into the senior years and preventing dementia-like illness.
In work at the U. of I., researchers used nanoimprint lithography and carbon nanotubes to replicate features with nanometer dimensions. "We were able to demonstrate reliable patterning at the 2nm scale, and even some capability down to 1nm," said John Rogers, Beckman researcher and professor of materials science and engineering at U of I.
