Professor Joanna Shisler obtained a BA degree in Microbiology from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio in 1990. She earned PhD from Emory University in 1996 in the Department of Microbiology. From 1997-2001, Shisler was a post-doctoral fellow at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, under the guidance of Dr. Bernard Moss. Her fellowship culminated in winning the prestigious Norman P. Salzman Award for Excellence in Virology in 1999. Shisler joined the faculty of the University of Illinois in 2001, and has a primary appointment in the Department of Microbiology. She also is Associate Director of Water and Health Research for the Safe Global Water Institute at the University of Illinois, and an Affiliate at the University of Illinois Institute for Genomic Biology and in the Department of Pathobiology.
