Biography

N. R. Aluru received his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1995. He is a professor in the UIUC Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering and a full-time faculty member in the Beckman Institute Computational Multiscale Nanosystems group. His fields of professional interest are microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), microfluidics, Bio-MEMS, numerical methods, and parallel algorithms.

Research

The central theme of Aluru's research is the development of innovative computational methods for analysis and design of MEMS, microfluidics, electronics, and mechanics. Recent work has focused on the development of new finite-cloud meshless methods to build simpler CAD systems for MEMS and microfluidics. In particular, his group has applied the meshless methods for efficient analysis and design of piezoelectric MEMS, electro-osmotic phenomena in Bio-MEMS, and opto- and electro-mechanical systems. The group is also working on developing direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) methods for analysis of microfluidic devices. Aluru's sources of funding are DARPA and the UIUC Research Board.
