Deck the Halls: Behind-the-Scenes of the Real-Time Singing MRI Holiday Greeting

A behind-the-scenes look at the science of the Beckman Institute's real-time singing MRI holiday greeting.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) can provide extremely detailed and useful images of the soft-tissues inside the human body. However, one of the drawbacks of the technology is that it takes a relatively long time to create these images. But researchers at the Beckman Institute have devised a way accelerate the process -- by separating the spatial and temporal information generated by an MRI scanner -- and can now create real-time movies of what's happening inside the body.

MRI researcher and Beckman Institute faculty member Brad Sutton discribes how it works.
