The Arnold O. and Mabel M. Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology
at the University of Illinois was conceived early in 1983, when campus administrators
decided to assemble a proposal for a unique new venture in multidisciplinary research

Arnold and Mabel Beckman
Arnold O. Beckman was born in Cullom, Illinois, on April 10, 1900. He received a
B.S. degree in chemical engineering in 1922 and a M.S. degree in physical chemistry
in 1923. Dr. Beckman and his wife Mabel M. Beckman contributed nearly $350 million
to the advancement of research and education.

Building Information
The Institute’s 313,000 square feet, located on six floors, make it an impressive
boundary to the northern-end of campus and a major university landmark. The massive
building is wrapped in limestone and brick laid in a Flemish bond pattern with broad
expanses of green reflective glass and topped with a copper roof.
